The first Hunger Games film, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, was a critical and financial success. But just how true was it to the books? Let’s take a look at some of the major differences between the first Hunger Games film and the book.
The Mockingjay Pin
Book: The mockingjay pin is already subversive
In the book, Madge--the mayor's daughter--gives Katniss the pin. The move surprises Katniss because she assumed Madge hated her, and because the pin is already subversive, since a symbol of a Mockingjay is considered to be “mocking” the Capitol for creating them.
Movie: The mockingjay pin has no signifiance.
In the movie, Lawrence's Katniss simply finds the pin at a black-market sale and buys it. The symbol on the pin is never explained, nor is it given any political meaning at this time.
Katniss Hates Appearances
Book: More of a deal is made regarding the Capitol “makeover” Katniss receives
In the book, it is made clear that Katniss is uncomfortable with a focus being put on her appearance, and that she hates the idea of having to be made “pretty” to the Capitol’s standards in order to compete in the games. Haymitch has to warn her to listen to what the stylists say, because they’re here to help her win sponsors.
Movie: No mention is made of Katniss’ thoughts on the makeover, nor does she indicate any resistance to them. This gives Lawrence’s version of Katniss less to do—which is a shame, because it would have given viewers a better understanding of Katniss’ personality.
Katniss and the Avox
Book: Katniss recognizes an Avox in the Capitol
In the book, Katniss sees a red-headed Avox that she recognizes from the forest surrounding District 12. In the book, Avoxes are people punished for rebellion against the Capitol by having their tongues cut out; they are then forced to serve the rest of their life as servants, particularly for tributes and Capitol elite. The Avox that Katniss recognizes is a girl she saw captured, whom she believes called out for help as Katniss watched her be taken away.
Movie: Avoxes are never explained
Avoxes are seen in the film, but they are never explained nor given any particular attention. Katniss’ backstory with an Avox is never mentioned. While this is a minor detail, it was another missed chance for world building and for allowing Lawrence’s Katniss to have more depth.
